Is Your Property Ready for Longer Nights? An October Security Checklist

An October Security Checklist

October brings cooler temperatures, changing leaves, and noticeably shorter days. It’s also a great time for homeowners and businesses to take a closer look at their security and safety systems.

As daylight hours decrease and the holiday season approaches, a few simple checks can help make sure your property is ready for the months ahead. Use this October security checklist to get started.

1. Check Your Outdoor Lighting

With the sun setting earlier, outdoor lighting becomes even more important. Walk around your property after dark and look for areas that could use additional lighting.

Pay special attention to entrances, walkways, driveways, parking areas, loading areas, and other frequently used spaces. Motion-activated lighting can also help improve visibility when someone approaches your property.

2. Inspect Your Security Cameras

Your security cameras are only helpful when they're providing a clear view of the areas you need to monitor.

Take a few minutes to review your cameras and make sure they haven't shifted or become obstructed. Clean the lenses, check camera angles, and test nighttime visibility. Trees, shrubs, decorations, and other seasonal changes can sometimes block a camera's view without you realizing it.

3. Test Your Security System

When was the last time you checked your security system?

October is a good time to make sure your system is functioning properly before the busy holiday season. Check your sensors, review your notification settings, and make sure everyone who needs to use the system knows how to arm and disarm it properly.

If you're unsure whether your system is working as it should, contact your security provider for assistance.

4. Review Doors, Windows, and Other Entry Points

Doors and windows are some of the most important areas to include in a security check.

Inspect locks and hardware for signs of wear or damage and make sure doors and windows close and lock properly. Businesses should also review less frequently used entrances, emergency exits, storage areas, and other access points.

5. Review Access Control

For businesses with access control systems, fall is a good opportunity to review who currently has access to your building.

Confirm that employee credentials are up to date and remove access for anyone who no longer needs it. You may also want to review access levels to make sure employees can enter only the areas necessary for their roles.

Keeping access permissions current is a simple but important part of maintaining a secure facility.

6. Don't Forget Fire and Life Safety

October is recognized as Fire Prevention Month, making it an ideal time to review fire and life safety measures as well.

Check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors according to manufacturer recommendations and make sure your family or employees know what to do in an emergency. Businesses should also review emergency procedures and ensure exits and evacuation routes remain accessible.

If your property uses monitored fire or life safety systems, make sure they're being properly maintained and tested.

7. Start Preparing for the Holiday Season

October is also the perfect time to think ahead.

The coming months can bring holiday travel, increased deliveries, visitors, seasonal employees, and changes in normal business hours. Reviewing your security now gives you time to address potential issues before the holiday season gets into full swing.
